Campus Transit System, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Enabling emission-free public transport in Riyadh

SICE, a Spanish general contractor, is working in an engineering, procurement and construction contract with a customer in Saudi Arabia for the deployment of a modern electric rapid transit project at King Saud University in Riyadh.

The trolleybus line has an overall length of 10 km and includes 12 closed, air-conditioned stations each with two platforms distributed along the trolleybus route. A total of 12 single-articulated 19.5 m long electric buses will be serving the line operating at 750 V DC. The buses will run on separate lines on the site. Priority control at the crossroads to the other streets will ensure smooth and efficient passenger transit.

Hitachi Energy has been selected by SICE to provide the traction power supply and distribution system. Hitachi Energy's scope covers the design, engineering, testing, commissioning and installation of three DC traction substations and the SCADA control and monitoring system.

The traction substations are connected to the local grid at 13.8 kV converting alternating current to direct current feeding the overhead line with the required traction voltage.
