Meet our people: Holger Hartel

Hello, I am Holger Hartel, a power consultant helping to shape the energy transition. Here is my story.

From an early age, I’ve been fascinated by mathematics, physics, and information technology. These technical fields have always been close to my heart, and I’m fortunate to apply my passion for them in my daily work.

I grew up in Leverkusen, Germany, and later studied electrical engineering and information technology at RWTH Aachen University. After completing my studies, I was eager to gain hands-on experience in the power industry. This led me to move to Mannheim in 2008, where I joined the Hitachi Energy Power Consulting team in the field of network planning. Since 2019, I’ve been serving as a Principal Technical Consultant.

Mannheim, one of eight Power Consulting locations, is situated in the Rhine-Neckar region, a vibrant area home to over two million residents. The region stands out as one of Germany’s economic hubs, a rich cultural heritage, and historic landmarks such as nearby Heidelberg. The area offers a wide range of leisure activities, and I enjoy spending my free time outdoors. Hiking and cycling in the picturesque surroundings are among my favorite pastimes.

The industry is constantly changing

The energy transition (renewable integration and electrification) translates into a lot of movement in my chosen field, which is exciting to me! I enjoy being at the forefront of this transformation, and guiding clients through it. In my specific case, this usually happens in one of two ways:

  • Support for industrial partners to achieve specific targets, such as integrating new plants, expanding existing ones, or modifying plant characteristics. While they have a vision, we work together to define their needs and develop tailored solutions.

  • Specialists in the power industry—Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs)—rely on our market and technical expertise. We provide the technology and expert guidance needed to meet their operational goals.

One of the aspects I enjoy most about my role at Power Consulting is the diversity of tasks. From sales activities and network calculations to software simulations, training sessions, and documenting findings, no two days are the same. A project culminates with the presentation of results and recommendations to the client—a moment of shared accomplishment.

When the project is complete, we are keen to know how it turned out in reality. It’s an amazing experience to go from a digital model to the realization of the final solution! We see how the concentrated elements in our calculations play out as physical components and incorporate our learnings into future engagements.

Helping to shape the energy transition

As the energy industry evolves, various government bodies, institutions, and committees are working to introduce new regulations that support sustainable transformation in the power industry. Part of my job is to help Hitachi Energy integrate those regulations to advance a sustainable energy future for all. I contribute to this effort by representing Hitachi Energy on a working council focused on grid connection rules.  Engaging with stakeholders about the future of energy systems is a fascinating aspect of my role and one that keeps me motivated. It is so interesting!

Collaboration and teamwork form the foundation of my work, whether partnering with other companies or working with colleagues at Hitachi Energy. I value the collaborating and global team spirit in with Power Consulting and always enjoy working with teams in other locations around the world to develop innovative solutions together. This constant innovation ensures that there’s always something new to learn - a key factor that makes my career so fulfilling.
