Hitachi Energy strengthens Svenska kraftnät transmission network
Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future for all, with its consortium partner Kanonaden Entreprenad Mälardalen AB, today announces another major order from Svenska kraftnät for a power quality solution to enable improved transmission capacity on the existing 400 kV transmission line, CL26. Two new 400 kV series compensation systems will be built to replace the existing obsolete system in Tandö. The new stations will be in Olingan in Härjedalen municipality and Gräsmark in Sunne municipality.
The new series compensation systems will reduce downtime and environmental impact by increasing transmission capacity and improving voltage stability in the transmission network. Hitachi Energy and its consortium partner will provide a complete technical solution, from design and project management to delivery, installation, and commissioning. The new stations are expected to operate in April 2026.
"We are incredibly happy to be able to deliver our state-of-the-art series compensation solution for two more stations at Svenska kraftnät,” says Anna Svensson, Head of Power Quality Solutions at Hitachi Energy. Our fantastic teams in Västerås and Ludvika are harnessing this advanced technology that allows to transfer more active power over the existing power corridor."
"We are very grateful and proud to be trusted again by Svenska kraftnät to deliver our expertise in Sweden,” says Tobias Hansson, Country Managing Director of Hitachi Energy in Sweden. " We are heavily investing to increase our production capacity and recruiting to support the transition to renewable energy. It is of utmost importance to be able to contribute and thus strengthen the existing national grid to be more sustainable, flexible and secure."
By installing a series of compensation systems at one or more suitable points in a power grid, it is possible to increase the transmitted power by up to 50 percent through new and existing power lines. From an electrical point of view, a series-compensated power line will reduce the length of the line and improve the voltage stability in a power grid. Series compensation offers economic, environmental, and timing benefits compared to the alternative of commissioning a new power line.
