Francesco is determined to strengthen the role of integrity toward a sustainable future

I am Francesco De Carlo, I am 26 years old, and I work in the Legal & Integrity function as Junior Counsel in our new offices in Milan, Italy. I started working as an intern for Hitachi Energy in May 2021 right after graduating in law. As a junior counsel, I am lucky to be exposed to a wide range of topics, which give me a 360-degree vision of our company. My role is to support the Head of Legal and all our colleagues, making my day-to-day always different and interesting thanks to exciting new challenges - from corporate matters to commercial negotiations, from privacy-related questions to ensuring integrity-driven behavior while making sure we are always up-to-date and compliant with the laws in our operations. Every day is truly different!

Interacting with my colleagues, regardless of their role, makes me realize how everyone cares about the environment. Not only is everyone careful in their habits, but all are focused on the research and consequent implementation of new technologies to make a more sustainable future a reality. Being part of such a significant movement and seeing the results for the global community feed my motivation.

Bringing clarity to make better decisions

Like every other country, Italy has some rules and legal institutes that are highly technical and country specific. In other jurisdictions, the same situation may be regulated very differently or specific legislation on such a topic may not exist. Given the peculiarities of each country’s legal system, fully comprehending how some aspects are disciplined elsewhere may be tricky for someone who has never encountered them before. Also, in some instances, a well-known legal concept in one legal system may be entirely new for someone with a different background. I believe that in my role, having the skill to communicate clearly and being able to provide a well-rounded and eloquent answer or explanation, when very complex concepts are at stake, is essential. Therefore, every time a colleague within the Legal & Integrity function or from another function has taken some time to simply compliment on such aspect, I highly appreciate it.

I am incredibly proud to use my energy to contribute to creating a more sustainable future by implementing new technologies. I am also proud to be part of a genuinely global team where daily you can see the collaboration between colleagues with very different backgrounds but also with the same purpose of making a better future available for all of us and the next generations.
