Hitachi Energy and Enedis have signed €350 million agreements to power France’s energy future

Press Release | Zurich, Switzerland | 24.09.2026 | 2 min read

  • World’s largest transformer manufacturer partners with Enedis to deliver transformers and lifecycle services for France’s grid expansion and modernization
  • The contractual agreements strengthen electricity grids to accelerate renewables integration, electric mobility, and industrial electrification across the country

Hitachi Energy, the global leader in electrification, has signed long-term framework agreements with Enedis, France’s leading distribution system operator, worth €350 million ($398 million USD). The long-term agreements secure the delivery of distribution and power transformers, helping to address the global transformer shortage, a critical component in strengthening France’s electricity grid.

Phasing out fossil fuels is a climate and strategic imperative for France. The goal is to reduce the share of fossil fuels in France’s energy mix from 60 percent to 40 percent by 2030 through a massive shift toward electricity. A secure, long-term transformer supply enables Enedis to modernize the grid at scale, manage growing demand, and ensure reliable power for millions of consumers.

Hitachi Energy and Enedis share a nearly two-decade relationship, supported by our manufacturing footprint in Italy and Poland. These agreements reinforce our commitment to securing transformer capacity and co-creating solutions that strengthen France’s power grid and accelerate the clean energy transition.

As global demand for grid infrastructure intensifies, long-term agreements provide customers with certainty, availability, and cost predictability needed to modernize and expand their networks on time.

The agreements also deliver transparency regarding environmental performance through an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)1, which assesses each product’s environmental performance across its lifecycle, combined with a continuous commitment to improving manufacturing performance throughout the contract term. By combining a large installed base with proactive, data-driven insights and comprehensive lifecycle services, the partnership reduces unplanned outages, boosts transformer efficiency, and extends asset life. Together, these capabilities lay the foundation for long‑term collaboration and enable Enedis to build a resilient, sustainable, and future‑ready grid.

Hitachi Energy is the world's largest transformer manufacturer, with the largest installed base, a broad portfolio, manufacturing capacity, and market coverage, operating over 60 transformer factories and more than 30 service centers worldwide and employing over 20,000 people in its Transformers business.

Reference
1 The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a lifecycle assessment of a product’s environmental impacts, independently verified by a third party in accordance with an international standards framework (ISO 14025) and specific product category rules for calculating and declaring the environmental impact performance of products across their lifecycle. It provides a common, science-based, and data-driven reference framework, aligned with the ISO 14040/44 and ISO 14025 standards.
