R&D Mechanical Senior Engineer for Power Transformers

The Opportunity

Join our R&D team at the Córdoba Technology Center, part of the global Technology organization within the Transformer Business Unit. As a Senior R&D Mechanical Engineer, you will lead initiatives to enhance transformer performance and reliability through advanced mechanical simulations, innovative manufacturing processes, and robust design of external components in collaboration with other R&D teams.

How you will make an impact

  • Lead and execute R&D projects focused on mechanical simulation, including nonlinear and transient analysis to assess short-circuit forces and structural integrity in transformer components.

  • Develop and validate welding and manufacturing processes for transformer tanks and external structures, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards.

  • Drive innovation in manufacturing techniques, including 3D printing and material characterization for transformer applications.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate simulation results into design tools and technical standards.

  • Contribute to technology road mapping and strategy in mechanical domain.

  • Support factory troubleshooting and provide technical guidance on mechanical issues related to transformer externals.

  • Prepare technical documentation and reports to communicate findings and support knowledge transfer.

  • Engage with external stakeholders (customers, universities, research centers) to foster partnerships and promote technical excellence.

  • Lead and manage R&D projects self-driven on time, on budget, and with the required quality following Hitachi Energy internal standards and processes.

  • Assess production processes and proactively identify gaps and areas of improvement.

Your background

  • MS degree in Mechanical engineering

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in R&D, engineering, or academic research, preferably in the transformer or energy sector.

  • Proficiency in CAD modeling (e.g., CATIA, CREO, NX, SolidWorks) and simulation tools (e.g., Ansys, Comsol, Nastran).

  • Strong background in mechanical simulation, welding technologies, and manufacturing process optimization.

  • Ability to effectively use external and internal standards and regulations.

  • Awareness of intellectual property considerations in the research and development process.

  • A structured, problem-solving, self-driven, solutions-oriented approach

  • Awareness in power transformer design, including the necessary technical areas and industry standards.

  • Familiarity with material characterization and fatigue/ULS analysis.

  • Spirit of innovation, out of the box thinking.

  • Excellent abilities in teamwork in international teams with excellent interpersonal skills, with strong communication skills.

  • Fluent spoken and written English.
