Hitachi Energy introduces two transformer component innovations at CWIEME, Berlin, Germany

Features | Berlin, Germany | 05.06.2025 | 2 min read

Modernizing transformer solutions with SF6-free GIS-bushings and a space-saving on-load tap-changer

Hitachi Energy launched two transformer component innovations at CWIEME, the leading global conference for transformer components and insulation in Berlin, Germany. The company introduced GARIP® Eco, next-generation sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆)-free transformer-GIS bushings, and VUBB Compact, a space-saving on-load tap-changer (OLTC) for modern transformer designs.

Moving toward a more sustainable grid with SF₆-free bushings

As the industry moves away from SF₆ toward more sustainable alternatives to meet government regulations and global sustainability standards, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) design has changed to accommodate higher internal gas pressure. This shift places new requirements on all components – especially the transformer bushing, which is the interface between transformers and switchgear.

GARIP Eco is specifically engineered for SF₆-free GIS applications, such as Hitachi Energy’s EconiQ® SF6-free GIS. Built on the proven GARIP platform, it features advanced gas sealing systems and is tested for high-pressure gas compatibility. The bushing retains its predecessor’s thermal and dielectric performance while supporting various gas mixtures and GIS designs. It is compatible with new installations and retrofit projects, including various GIS platforms. The GARIP Eco has been successfully deployed in field installations across Europe, demonstrating its readiness for real-world applications.

Smaller transformer designs, thanks to VUBB Compact

Hitachi Energy also unveiled the purpose-built VUBB Compact OLTC at CWIEME, which is designed to meet the needs of OEMs and utilities for compact, efficient, and sustainable transformers. Developed as part of the T-Sync™ tap-changer portfolio, VUBB Compact significantly reduces the transformer footprint without compromising durability, performance, or ease of integration.

The VUBB Compact has four variants, each optimized for specific voltage classes and transformer designs. This enables smaller and lighter transformers, lowers material use, and reduces the overall carbon footprint. It offers greater flexibility in transformer placement and applications and simplifies the integration of standard and customized transformers.

This innovation directly addresses the growing demand for resilient, space-efficient solutions in decentralized energy systems, renewable generation tie-ins, and distribution networks undergoing modernization.

Modernizing transformers for a more sustainable future

Both innovations are a major step for transformer components. While GARIP Eco supports the industry’s transition to SF₆-free switchgear, the VUBB Compact reflects a shift in engineering – purpose-built, voltage-matched, and ready to empower a new generation of smarter, smaller, and more sustainable transformers.
