Hitachi Energy and Fingrid partner to enhance Finnish grid development with large power transformers

Press Release | Europe | 26.06.2026 | 1 min read

Hitachi Energy, a global leader in electrification, has entered into an agreement with Fingrid, Finland's transmission system operator, to deliver seven large power transformers, each with a capacity of 400 MVA and operating at 400 kV. This contract is a pivotal part of reinforcing the Finnish electricity grid and includes the option to supply two additional transformers.

These transformers will be manufactured at Hitachi Energy's up-building transformer factory in the Vaasa region. The new factory, scheduled for completion by 2027, will double Finland's transformer production capacity, marking also the return of large power transformer manufacturing to the Vaasa region.

This contract marks an important milestone for our new facility, Hitachi Energy Park, launching large-scale power transformer production that also significantly supports Finland's energy security. By expanding our capabilities to include large power transformers and reactors, we are directly addressing the increasing demands of our customers as the energy system undergoes a historic transformation towards electrification. It is particularly gratifying to deliver the first large power transformers of this range from our new production line to Fingrid, a partner with whom we have collaborated closely for decades.

Matti Vaattovaara
Managing Director of Hitachi Energy Finland.

Fingrid's grid development plan for 2026 - 2035 outlines investments totaling approximately €5.2 billion to enhance Finland's electricity transmission capacity. Their investments aim to support the electrification of industry and society, ensuring the reliable supply of clean electricity. Finland sits among Europe’s frontrunners with its renewable energy, carbon neutrality and climate plans.

Our investments in the transmission grid are at a historically high level, and large power transformers play a key role in enabling industrial electrification and new customer connections. We are very pleased with Hitachi Energy’s investment in domestic transformer manufacturing in Vaasa. The agreement also strengthens Finland’s security of supply and the reliability of supply chains

Timo Kiiveri
Executive Vice President Fingrid

The 400 kV power transformers are critical for the safe, reliable, and efficient transmission of electricity over long distances. Deliveries of these units under the agreement are scheduled between 2029 and 2032 to Fingrid's substations across Finland, contributing to the nation's energy reliability and security.

Hitachi Energy is making substantial efforts to meet increasing electricity demand and enhance grid resilience, while supporting utilities in achieving the Energy Trilemma of affordability, sustainability, and reliability. Our strategic investments in transformer manufacturing and technology centers across Europe, including the state-of-the-art facility in the Vaasa region, are pivotal in inspiring the next era of sustainable energy. These efforts are not only strengthening Europe's energy infrastructure but also ensuring a secure and efficient power system for generations to come
