Master's Thesis Thermal Engineering 80 - 100% (f/m/d)

The opportunity

Are you passionate about thermal engineering, simulation, and sustainable energy solutions? In this master's thesis, you will contribute to the development of next-generation dry-type transformer enclosures used in critical indoor and outdoor applications. Working closely with experienced engineers, you will investigate heat transfer, airflow management, and enclosure design using advanced CFD simulation methods. You will gain hands-on experience in solving real industrial challenges while developing expertise in thermal optimization, product development, and engineering analysis. This is a unique opportunity to combine academic research with practical application and make a meaningful contribution to future transformer technologies. The title of the thesis will be: Thermal Optimization of Dry-Type Transformer Enclosures Using CFD: Design of IP55 and NEMA 3R Solutions under AN/AF Cooling.

How you'll make an impact

  • Analyze the current enclosure design concepts for IP55 and NEMA 3R dry-type transformer applications

  • Define CFD simulation models to evaluate airflow distribution, temperature fields, and thermal performance under AN and AF cooling conditions

  • Investigate different design parameters, including finned wall geometry, ventilation strategy, airflow paths, fan-assisted cooling configuration, and material selection

  • Compare alternative enclosure solutions in terms of thermal efficiency, manufacturability, robustness, and compliance with protection requirements

  • Identify critical areas related to heat accumulation, restricted airflow, and possible design limitations

  • Develop engineering recommendations and design guidelines for optimized dry-type transformer enclosures

Your background

  • Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field

  • Basic knowledge of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and mechanical design

  • Interest in numerical simulation, CFD analysis, and industrial product optimization

  • Familiarity with CAD tools and/or CFD software will be considered an advantage
