Breaking new ground in Lenzburg

Features | Switzerland | 03.07.2026 | 4 min read

A new chapter begins in Lenzburg. With the groundbreaking of a new office and logistics building, Hitachi Energy is investing in the future of its semiconductor operations, enabling further production expansion to support growing global demand. The milestone reflects the site's strategic role in advancing electrification and its contribution to Hitachi Energy's Next25 journey.

On a hot and sunny morning in Lenzburg, colleagues, partners, and local representatives gathered to mark a moment that embodies continuity and change. Hard hats were fitted, shovels were raised, and with the first turn of earth, Hitachi Energy officially broke ground on a new chapter for its semiconductor site in Switzerland.
The ceremony gathered key leaders, including Dr. Rainer Käsmaier, Managing Director, Global Product Group Semiconductors; Niklas Persson, CEO of Grid Integration Business Unit; Pascal Daleiden, Country Managing Director DACH; and Andreas Schmid, Mayor of Lenzburg, highlighting the strategic importance of the site and the strong connection between Hitachi Energy and the local community.

A symbolic highlight of the ceremony further emphasised this connection: the Mayor of Lenzburg presented a rowan tree, a tree deeply rooted in local tradition. Known for its resilience and longevity it serves as a fitting symbol for Hitachi Energy Semiconductors and its long-standing history in Lenzburg, while also representing growth for the future.

A larger transformation
As electrification accelerates and demand for stable, efficient power continues to grow, advanced semiconductors play an increasingly critical role. A common theme emerged throughout the ceremony – electrification is no longer a trend but a defining transformation of our time.
Niklas Persson emphasized that power semiconductors form the foundation of modern power electronic systems. They are essential to technologies, such as HVDC and power quality solutions, enabling the efficient conversion, control and transmission of electricity.
At the Lenzburg site, these components are designed and manufactured to serve applications ranging from grid infrastructure to transportation and industry. The new building will support the continued expansion of these capabilities to help meet the rising global demand and strengthen supply for customers worldwide.
The investment is part of Hitachi Energy’s wider efforts to scale manufacturing, drive innovation, and enhance operational performance across its global footprint.

Groundbreaking ceremony at the Semiconductor Factory in Lenzburg

Key hub for power semiconductors
For decades, Lenzburg has been at the heart of Hitachi Energy’s semiconductor activities. Today, it is an advanced and highly automated manufacturing site, and a key contributor to the company’s global operations.
Dr. Rainer Käsmaier spoke of the site’s over four-decade journey. From BBC (Brown Boveri & Cie) in 1981, it has evolved into a global hub for power semiconductors. This legacy continues to define Lenzburg’s role within Hitachi Energy.
The groundbreaking highlights the site’s strategic importance. It is not only a centre of production, but also a place of expertise, collaboration and innovation. The investment reflects a long-term commitment to Switzerland as a location for high-value manufacturing and engineering excellence.
At the same time, the close collaboration with local authorities, underscored by the participation of Mayor Andreas Schmid, shows how global ambition and regional strength come together.

Enabling growth and creating space for the future
The new office and logistics building is designed to do more than increase capacity. By bringing office functions into a modern, purpose-built environment, it will free up space within existing facilities for further production expansion. The expansion is also part of Hitachi Energy’s Next25 journey, focused on building the foundation for the next decades of electrification by investing in capacity, industrial capabilities, and people. Planned as a multi-level facility with an integrated logistics concept, it will enable more efficient material flows, higher throughput, and improved collaboration across teams, customers, and partners.
Beyond its technical capabilities, the building will also create a modern working environment. It will support collaboration and provide space for teams, customers and partners to connect and innovate together.

Looking ahead
While the groundbreaking marks the symbolic start of construction, it also represents something larger: confidence in the future of power semiconductors and their role in enabling the energy transition.
As highlighted by Pascal Daleiden said the investment represents Hitachi Energy’s long-term commitment to Lenzburg, to Switzerland, and to the continued development of the company’s semiconductor headquarter and largest manufacturing site.
The coming decades will be shaped by increasing electrification, rising demand for efficient energy systems, and the need for resilient infrastructure.
As construction progresses over the coming years, the Lenzburg site will continue to evolve. It will strengthen its capabilities, expand its contribution to global electrification, and build on a legacy of innovation that spans generations.
This is not just about a new building. It is about creating the foundation for future growth, advancing technology that powers everyday life, and reinforcing Lenzburg’s role in shaping a more sustainable energy system.
