Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU)
Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ RES670 is a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) that is a building block for Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS). The PMU is a device that provides power system AC voltages and currents as phasors for all voltage levels in power system networks using a common source for synchronization. The reference for the phase angle may be a precision time protocol (PTP) time synchronization source or the NavStar Global Positioning System - GPS, both supplying highly accurate time and date.
PMUs are capable of capturing synchrophasor measurements that are samples from an electric waveform in quick succession and reconstructing the phasor quantity. The time-synchronized measurements are important to perfectly match the grid’s supply and demand, thereby reducing frequency imbalances that can cause stress on the grid and potentially cause power outages. PMUs are installed at substation level and can be connected directly to the current and voltage transformers within the substations. On the other hand, WAMS collect, store, transmit, and provide ways to analyze critical data from key points across the power networks and over large geographical areas.
The testing and certification were conducted as part of Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ participation in the IEEE Conformity Assessment Program (ICAP). The tests were conducted in an IEEE authorized PMU Test Laboratory, as per the specifications of the IEEE Synchrophasor Measurement Test Suite, and the RES670 version 2.2 is now listed in the prestigious IEEE Certification Registry.
