This collaboration in Brazil will enhance operational reliability and support the transformation of urban mobility in Sao Paulo, the most populous city in the Americas.

Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader in electrification, has signed a contract with rail concessionaire Trívia Trens (Comporte Group) to provide power supply for Lines 11, 12, and 13 of the Metropolitan Trains, a concession sponsored by the Government of the State of São Paulo focused on urban mobility. The planned improvements will ensure a stable and reliable energy system for the trains, allowing shorter intervals and more consistent service, benefiting around 1.3 million passengers daily.

With investments totaling approximately $2.66 billion USD (14.3 billion Brazilian reais) in the next 25 years1, the concession includes the modernization and expansion of over 120 km of railway tracks across 11-Coral, 12-Safira, and 13-Jade, which make up the Alto Tietê Lot. The plan also includes the construction of eight new stations and the modernization of 27 stations.

“The implementation of the new substations marks another important step in modernizing our infrastructure. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to operational efficiency and service quality, ensuring greater stability and reliability for the transportation of thousands of passengers every day,” said Tiago Augusto Alves, Director of Implementation at Trivia.

The high performance of the new railway lines depends on a reliable power supply system to ensure consistent and efficient energy delivery. Hitachi Energy’s scope encompasses high-voltage grid connections and a range of direct current (DC) electrical infrastructure solutions, including rectifiers and DC switchgear, building on its recent acquisition of COET, a leading designer and manufacturer of power solutions for the rail and electric mobility segments.

By implementing these technologies, the project will benefit from robust performance that meets the demanding requirements of reliability, efficiency, and scalability, essential for seamless railway operations throughout the concession period. The collaboration between Hitachi Energy and Trívia Trens reinforces a shared commitment to advancing modern and sustainable urban mobility.

“Megacities like São Paulo must accelerate the transition to more sustainable urban mobility, and the Alto Tietê Lot is a concrete step in that direction,” said Marco Berardi, Head of Grid & Power Quality Solutions and Service at Hitachi Energy. “Electrifying transportation is essential to achieving climate goals, and our commitment is to apply our expertise in grid integration to enhance operational efficiency for customers like Trívia Trens and support reducing the environmental impact of transportation.”

The São Paulo Metropolitan Region is home to approximately 21.6 million people2 – more than twice the population of developed countries such as Sweden (10.5 million)3 and Portugal (10.7 million)4. This urban scale presents unique challenges for mobility, and initiatives like this concession represent a structural step forward in meeting growing demand.

Commitment to Brazil

An integral part of Brazil’s story for over 70 years, Hitachi Energy is expanding its footprint in the country with the construction of a new transformer factory in Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo. The facility will feature automated processes and a strong focus on sustainability, doubling local production capacity and creating more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.

This investment is part of a greater Hitachi Energy’s global program exceeding US$9 billion – the largest in the sector worldwide – aimed at expanding manufacturing, R&D, engineering, and partnerships. In line with the company’s Purpose to inspire the next era of sustainable energy, the initiative aims to make the global energy system more sustainable, secure, resilient, and affordable.
