Grid-eXpand® Mobile solutions provide grid operators and utilities the rapid deployment and reliability they need to maintain power continuity during emergencies, maintenance, and peak demand - enabling fast energization when it matters most. It delivers pre-engineered, factory-tested, plug-and-play substations on trailers/skids. Easily transported and installed, they minimize environmental disturbance while allowing utilities to respond quickly to evolving grid needs. It offers multiple configurations to meet diverse requirements, covering voltage levels up to 420 kV and power ratings up to 500 MVA.

Grid-eXpand® Mobile Substations

The Mobile Substations are a complete plug-and-play substation on a single trailer or skid for fast and easy transportation and rapid energization, whenever and wherever needed.

Grid-eXpand® Mobile Portfolio

Portable, self-sustained equipment and transformer on a single trailer or skid

Grid-eXpand® Mobile Compact Substations (MCS) are the perfect solution when fast deployment and energization is required during grid expansions, maintenance or when back-up or emergency power is needed.

The Mobile Compact Substation (MCS) is defined by its exceptional compactness, integrating all high-voltage equipment and the power transformer onto a single semi-trailer or skid for compliant, fully assembled module transport. Serving as a containerized HV layout for fast installation and high mobility, MV and LV equipment can be combined on the same platform or placed on a separate mobile unit, allowing flexible configurations for needs.

Designs can be configured to comply with national grid codes and standards depending on customer requirements, including IEC or ANSI.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Grid‑eXpand® Mobile portfolio offers a range of flexible and scalable mobile substation solutions designed to meet different operational needs and grid requirements:

  • Mobile Compact Substation – An integrated, turnkey solution combining key substation functions in a highly compact format.

  • Mobile Modular Substation – A scalable and configurable solution suitable for higher voltage and power levels, allowing adaptation to complex grid scenarios.
  • EcoMobile Substation – A compact and SF6-free solution, optimized for reduced footprint and lower environmental impact.

Installation time depends mainly on the voltage level, power rating, and site-specific conditions.

  • As a reference, a 40 MVA – 150/30 kV mobile substation typically requires a few days for installation and commissioning.

  • Larger systems, such as a 500 MVA – 420/110 kV mobile substation, may require a few weeks, depending on site preparation, civil works, and grid connection conditions.

The modular design and factory-tested configuration significantly reduce on-site installation time compared to conventional substations.

Grid‑eXpand® Mobile substations are designed with redundancy to ensure high availability:

  • In case of failure of the primary auxiliary supply (via the auxiliary transformer), a battery system provides immediate backup to critical systems such as Protection & Control, Telecommunications, and SCADA.

  • As an additional level of emergency backup, an optional diesel generator can be included, comparable to those used in standard permanent substations, ensuring sustained auxiliary power during extended outages.
