The Challenge
Nomad Tech, a Portuguese leader in customer-tailored traction solutions, was looking for a new Power Semiconductor module to modernize traction converters from different fleets. The search led to Hitachi Energy’s latest Si IGBT module. This is how the collaboration between Hitachi Energy Semiconductors and Nomad Tech started.
By integrating advanced technology, Nomad Tech’s retrofit solution is expected to operate efficiently for another 30 years, minimizing the environmental impact of obsolete train systems as well as reducing energy consumption compared to older systems.
Nomad Tech was looking for a state-of-the-art traction Power Semiconductor module to upgrade both electric locomotives and multiple units across various projects. Hitachi Energy’s 6.5kV HiPak module with a power rating of 1000A, met their demand. The state-of-the-art semiconductor is the latest generation of its kind, the most powerful on the market and had the highest power rating compared to other similar modules.
However, the decision to proceed was not taken lightly: Nomad Tech required a rigorous field qualification process, ensuring the module met their exacting standards and operational requirements.
