The CERES Project

Hitachi Energy is in the process of completing studies for the CERES Project in South Australia (SA).

The CERES project is comprised of a 600 MW wind farm in the Yorke Peninsula output of which will be shipped via HVDC Light marine and terrestrial cables to the Adelaide load center.

One of the interesting aspects in these studies is the significant penetration of wind generation (CERES and non-CERES) in the SA system; up to 90% in some of the scenarios studied. This imposes some unique challenges in that there is a much reduced presence of synchronous generation in the area, and, consequently, of short-circuit levels; affecting the stability of wind farm controls and the stability of the ~550 km 220 kV and 132 kV interconnection between the South Australia and Victoria systems.
