Spark Prevention Unit (SPU): The innovation beyond standards to eliminate the bushfire risk from surge arresters

Spark Prevention Unit (SPU) is designed for surge arresters that are installed in bushfire risk areas.
With its proven performance, this innovating technology has been certified as spark-free according to class A of Australian Standard and approved for vegetation clearance exemption according to CalFire (California Regulation) in USA.
This session illustrates the technology principles of this patented design from Hitachi Energy, how SPU outperforms the standards’ requirements and its further applications with Wireless Indicator for ease-of-mind asset management.

High Voltage Digital Portfolio – Enabling digital substation and digital components

Decarbonization is transforming our energy system, driving an accelerated shift from fossil-based to renewable power generation and electrification of transportation, industry, and buildings sectors. This is creating the need to optimize energy both locally and system-wide leading to a complex “system of systems” that must be integrated and managed. Digitalization is the only way to manage this complexity, simplifying the contextualization of massive amounts of data. But this must be balanced with managing and optimizing today’s operations. Hitachi Energy can help you navigate this increasingly complex energy landscape. We have the right combination of connected products, software-based solutions, and digitally enabled services to solve real-world challenges and add real value.

POW switching of transformers and transmission lines as an alternative to PIRs for mitigating switching transients

Point on wave (POW) switching can effectively mitigate magnetizing inrush currents and temporary over-voltages during no-load energization of power transformers. It can also effectively mitigate switching over-voltages during deadline charging as well as during auto-reclosure on transmission lines together with avoiding delayed current zero phenomenon for high compensated lines. Thereby, it has been proven as an equally efficient & reliable alternative to PIRs. Furthermore, being on digital platform, the latest generation of POW devices can be configured for switching different type of load applications with the same CB, can adapt to dynamically changing load applications & system conditions and lastly, it can also handle external interferences in input signals more efficiently. This session aims to discuss the application of POW of transformers and transmission lines as an effective alternative to PIRs for mitigating switching transients.
