Rail SFC Light - solution for 16.7Hz and 25Hz rail electrification
The Rail SFC Light converter is a perfect fit for the demanding Rail application. It is designed to feed 16.7Hz and 25Hz single phase railway grids while balancing the load on the three phase feeding grid.
The use of robust and loss optimized semiconductors ensures highest efficiency, reliability and long lifetime of the converter. A modular converter allows to use standardized cells while at the same time matching the project specific demand.
The proven control algorithms that are already feeding more than 1.5GW into railway systems allow stable availability of the railway grid supply also for islanded grids as well as after fault recovery and ensure the desired converter reaction to transients and grid faults. The mechanical design supports the high availability through fast and easy access to all components and minimized maintenance and replacement times.
Benefits of Static Frequency Converters
Sustainability
Very high efficiency on converter as well as on system level, resulting in low losses and minimized lifecycle cost.
Higher availability
Very high converter reliability thanks to the use of proven robust components and redundancy in selected parts of the system.
Security of supply
Improved power quality and maintenance flexibility, and sophisticated control algorithms allowing to handle stringent fault conditions.
Grid code compliance
Balanced load, controlled harmonics, and capability to control the power factor independently on both sides.
Rail SFC Light is an excellent solution for maintaining a steady supply to 16.7Hz and 25Hz networks, while also reducing costs. Its low energy losses, reliable and robust design, and well thought-out maintenance concept are essential to meeting the high expectations of customers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Only in countries in which the catenary frequency differs from the frequency in the three phase grid. This is Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Austria (16.7Hz or 16 2/3Hz), and a small part of the US (25Hz).
Rail SFC Light uses a sophisticated grid forming control structure, which behaves similarly to an electrical machine, while at the same time protecting the converter from over-currents.
