SunZia Transmission: enabling 3 GW of renewable power across the U.S. Southwest

Customer Story | 1 min read

The SunZia Transmission project is the largest renewable energy infrastructure initiative in the United States. Spanning roughly 885 km (550 miles) between Corona, New Mexico and Pinal County, Arizona, the system is designed to enable the delivery of up to 3,000 MW of clean wind power to population centers across the Southwest region.

As part of this landmark development, Hitachi Energy is supplying HVDC Light® technology, MACH™ digital control platform, and advanced power semiconductors to ensure efficient long‑distance transmission, grid stability, power quality, and reliable integration of renewable generation

Challenge

Solution

Grid‑forming control to stably integrate 3.5 GW of renewable generation into a weak grid

±525 kV voltage & reactive power control stabilizing an 885 km corridor

High‑efficiency power conversion (+30%) enabled by next‑generation semiconductors

MACH™ automation ensuring coordinated control across SunZia East & West Converter Stations

AC Chopper technology to immediately restore power if it is temporarily interrupted by weather and other contingency events.
