Aligning High Voltage Product Supply with Market Demands

The U.S. high-voltage grid is undergoing significant change, driven by policy initiatives, major investments in grid modernization, a surge in renewable energy development including wind, solar, and battery storage, and the integration of large power users such as data centers. This rapid transformation is fueling unprecedented demand for high-voltage products, straining supply chains, and challenging project timelines. This session will highlight key market drivers and outline how manufacturers and customers can strengthen collaboration through early engagement and clear communication to better align product availability with project needs and reduce delays.

Utilizing BESS as an Emergency Power Supply System

The detrimental consequences of power outages, both in terms of economic impact and operational disruptions, are large. Typical outages persist for approximately one hour, yet it is not uncommon to encounter even longer disruptions, affecting numerous businesses on a monthly basis. Therefore, it is important to address power quality as an essential requirement of an electric system. To effectively manage these issues, it is necessary to understand the overall system and provide a qualitative description of the problem. Today, a variety of specialized equipment is employed to tackle such challenges. They all vary in their capabilities and features to measure and monitor various power parameters, mitigate issues, and correct the power quality issues. The solutions also differ in their speed of response, which is of crucial importance in various industries and applications. Initially, uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) were the primary power protection solutions. However, with the increasing reliance on technology and growing importance of uninterrupted power, other advanced systems have emerged as well, such as battery energy storage systems (BESS) that are used to provide temporary power during outages or load spikes, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Batteries That Lead the Grid: the New Paradigm of Grid Forming Control

As power systems transition toward higher shares of renewable energy, maintaining grid stability and reliability has become a critical challenge. Traditionally, synchronous generators have provided the inertia and voltage control essential for stable grid operation. However, with their displacement by inverter-based resources (IBRs), particularly battery energy storage systems (BESS), new control strategies are required. This talk explores the emerging paradigm of grid-forming control, a transformative approach where batteries do not merely follow the grid but actively form and stabilize it. We examine how grid-forming inverters emulate key characteristics of synchronous machines enabling batteries to take on a leadership role in grid dynamics. Through case studies, control architectures, different system configurations, and field deployments, this talk highlights how grid-forming BESS can enhance resilience, support black-start capabilities, and pave the way for a 100% inverter-based grid. We also address the evolving regulatory landscape and its implications for widespread adoption of grid-forming technologies.

Improving Energy Supply and Performance for Electric Vehicle Fleet Charging and Opportunity Charging Stations

The world is becoming increasingly accepting of electric vehicles for both commercial and private use. Everyone who is considering electrifying their vehicle fleet or providing an opportunity-charging facility is aware of the fundamental need to charge the vehicles, but that is where the questions begin to arise about the chargers and their capabilities, the electric infrastructure required to supply the energy, and how to control all of that in the most economical way without adverse impacts on the electricity supply. This session will explore these questions and show some of the current practices and future options for using energy hubs, smart chargers, and energy management to address the list of concerns of entities starting into the electric vehicle charging space.

Co-located (or Hybrid) Renewable Projects: Techno-Economic Considerations for Optimal and Future-proof Design

Optimal plant design must consider both minimizing capital and operational expenditures, as well as maximizing future revenue streams, to maximize the returns of investments.  In addition, such design will also consider key risks like changing market and utility transmission and distribution (T&D) conditions and changing regulations & grid requirements that may occur during the lifetime of the project (typically 25+ years).

  • Market & utility T&D conditions:  These are external factors that the developers have little or no control over.  A good, bankable forecast of the nodal prices at the point-of-interconnection (POI) will not only enable generating a high -quality revenue forecast but will also help garner investor trust towards the project final investment decision (FID).
  • Future-Proofing:  Grid codes and wholesale & ancillary market prices are changing faster than any time in utility history.  Ensuring plant flexibility in both hardware and software controls will enable them to adapt to new requirements such as grid-forming controls.  Additionally, if say frequency control participation is more lucrative in year 10, then the plant control can be adjusted accordingly, maximizing its revenue in that future year.

The poster will educate the audience on how to avoid over-design and achieve required flexibility through right-sizing and digital enablement of hybrid renewable projects.
