Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solutions

Integrating renewable power and enabling energy trade between Denmark and Germany


Energinet.dk SOV, (Denmark) and 50Hertz Transmission Gmb (Germany) awarded Hitachi Energy the contract to supply a complete turnkey, back-to-back HVDC converter station that interconnects the power grids of Denmark and Germany and three offshore wind farms.

Hitachi Energy technical solution demonstrates how new HVDC hybrid solutions can optimize power grids and make new and larger applications of offshore wind possible to further support EU targets for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The HVDC system helps secure the energy supply in both countries as well as supports energy trading cross border and reliably integrates the three offshore wind farms called Baltic 1, Baltic 2 and Kriegers Flak.

The innovative hybrid HVDC Light system digital master controller manages the complex task of controlling the entire Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution. By adjusting power flows in real-time, the system integrates and supports the wind farms and the two asynchronous AC power grids in Denmark and Germany, ensuring sustainable and reliable energy to consumers.

The 410 MW/150kV converter station is located in Bentwisch, northern Germany where it connects the Kriegers Flak offshore grid, part of the Danish electricity network, to the German network. The economic back-to-back set-up minimizes the environmental footprint of the installation.

Hitachi Energy have designed, engineered, supplied and installed the full hybrid HVDC solution, including high-voltage equipment such as power transformers, converter valves, cooling systems, the state-of-the art MACH control and protection system, and the unique digital master controller.

HVDC Light® technology provides sophisticated features to the network such as the “black-start” power restoration capability and exceptional power control enabling the system to stabilize the AC grid to manage the constant changes in the generation and load.
