Customer Success Story

Easing Delhi's traffic woes

Delhi commuter network runs smoothly with Hitachi Energy traction transformers

The state-owned Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) serves India’s National Capital Region and is the national benchmark for on-time project execution and efficiency. Electrified via 25-kilovolt (kV), 50-hertz (Hz) overhead catenaries, DMRC oversees 213 kilometers of track and 148 street-level,  elevated and underground stations, serving 2.661 million passengers each day.

Hitachi Energy has delivered an array of products and systems for DMRC over the years, including traction transformers for 614 high-capacity metro trains manufactured by Bombardier. For these metro cars, Hitachi Energy developed an integrated, under-frame traction transformer with a silicon oil cooler unit and accessories that ensure it will provide reliable service despite heavy daily use. The Hitachi Energy traction solution also guarantees low-noise levels.

The initial traction units for this project were made in Switzerland, and the remainder manufactured locally at Hitachi Energy’s state-of-the-art transformer facility in Vadodara, India, providing the customer with high-quality, locally-built products.

Deliveries were completed in 2012 and in 2015 Bombardier received new orders for additional train sets which will increase the DMRC metro fleet from 614 to 776 units – all of them equipped with Hitachi Energy traction transformers.
