Hitachi Energy earns double recognition at the 2026 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards

Features | 03.02.2026 | 3 min read

Hitachi Energy has achieved two major recognitions at the 2026 SEAL (Sustainability, Environmental Achievement & Leadership) Business Awards: the Sustainable Product Award for its hydrogen-powered generator, HyFlex®; and the Sustainable Service Award for its pioneering work in Applied Sustainability in Power Transformers. These recognitions further establish Hitachi Energy as a key innovator advancing practical, scalable pathways to decarbonization through technologies and services that are reshaping the future of sustainable energy.

HyFlex wins SEAL Sustainable Product Award

The SEAL Sustainable Product Award acknowledges HyFlex as one of the most innovative “purpose-built” sustainability solutions of the year – a recognition that signals hydrogen-to-power is fossil-free energy worldwide. HyFlex generates electricity, usable heat, and water without combustion, producing no harmful emissions while operating with minimal noise. It combines advanced fuel high-performance batteries, managed by an intelligent control system that maximizes efficiency.

Designed as a portable, plug-and-play unit, it is both flexible and scalable, delivering a dependable alternative to diesel generators for temporary or permanent installations in industries under rising decarbonization pressures.

Receiving the SEAL Sustainable Product Award recognition is a powerful acknowledgment of the progress HyFlex® has made.

HyFlex has consistently proven, through real-world deployments, that hydrogen-powered generation can reliably provide zero-emission power in situations where diesel generators were once the only viable option.

Marco Berardi, Head of Grid & Power Quality Solutions and Service at Hitachi Energy

A single 200-kilovolt-amperes (kVA) HyFlex unit can displace up to 300 tons of diesel annually and prevent an estimated 1,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. These capabilities have been demonstrated across Europe, where HyFlex has powered electric machinery on a construction site in the Netherlands, enabled shore-to-ship power in Sweden as a clean, quiet alternative to vessel engines at berth, and, most recently, in the United Kingdom, where it supported an entire construction site without diesel for four weeks.

Applied Sustainability in Power Transformers wins SEAL Sustainable Service Award

The SEAL Service Award recognizes Transformer Life Extension Services as a powerful and holistic approach to bringing sustainability to life within the electrical grid. This achievement is rooted in deep transformer expertise, advanced diagnostics, and proven refurbishment technologies that safely extend asset lifespan while preserving embedded carbon and reducing dependency on critical raw materials.

As the world accelerates towards carbon neutrality, lifecycle services are becoming more critical than ever to meet growing demand for clean energy and increase the reliability, flexibility and sustainability of energy systems worldwide. The rapid expansion of grid infrastructure creates both opportunities and challenges. Aging transformer fleets, long lead times for new units, and increasing scarcity of key materials underscore the urgency of addressing the energy trilemma—reliability, sustainability, and affordability. Meeting this challenge requires a balanced approach that leverages new equipment where essential, while maximizing the value of existing assets through life-extension strategies that allow transformers to operate safely and efficiently for the years to come.

As the backbone of the electrical system, transformers demand forward‑looking lifecycle strategies. Hitachi Energy offers a comprehensive suite of solutions—advanced condition assessment, predictive and proactive maintenance tools, and a full range of Life Extension Services including repair, refurbishment, and component upgrades. Anchored in a circular‑economy mindset, these services enhance performance, reduce the risk of unplanned outages, and significantly improve resource efficiency. In this way, transformer life extension becomes a cornerstone of a resilient, sustainable, and future‑ready energy system.

As Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Service partner supporting the world’s largest installed base, being recognized for the SEAL Sustainable Service Award for Applied Sustainability in Power Transformers, strengthens our dedication to delivering innovative technologies and high‑added value solutions for our customers to enhance performance, improve reliability and reduce environmental impact throughout the entire transformer lifecycle.
