Jorge Ponce at Power Consulting: Celebrating a 50‑year career of expertise and gratitude

This week marks the last in a 50 year long career before retirement for a dear colleague in the Power Consulting team based in Madrid, Spain. Read the interview with Jorge Ponse.  

Jorge, looking back, how many years does your professional career cover in total?

Jorge: "In total, there have been 50 years of professional career (15 in Argentina, and 35 in Spain). I started working at the age of 19 in Argentina while studying Electrical Engineering. In 1991 I was presented with the opportunity to work in Spain for a Spanish engineering and consulting firm. This company was acquired by ABB Power Grids in 2000; and finally the latter was acquired by Hitachi Energy: in the last 35 years I have changed companies several times without having moved from my desk (LOL). They were years full of learning, challenges and great people along the way. It has been a very enriching journey, both professionally and personally. My work also gave me the opportunity to get to know countries that perhaps I would not have thought of traveling to as a tourist: El Salvador, Russia, Angola... and of course all of Spain."

And how many of those years have you spent at Power Consulting Spain?

Jorge: "I have had the privilege of working for the last 26 years at Power Consulting Spain (the last 6 years as an employee of Hitachi Energy). It has been a very important stage in my professional life that I will always remember with the greatest appreciation."

What have you enjoyed most about working at Power Consulting?

Jorge: "Without a doubt, the people. Collaboration, trust and team spirit made even the most demanding moments worthwhile. I'm not just talking about my fellow consultants, but also the managers I was lucky enough to collaborate with. But, in my honest opinion, all the good things I mentioned perhaps would not have been so easily possible without the spirit of ethical, healthy and productive work that Hitachi's philosophy provides for all members of its company, among other values, and that its executives and managers transmit to all employees and in every detail."

What moment or experience are you most proud of?

Jorge: "Throughout so much time there have been many unique moments that meant for me a pride for the objectives achieved. But overall, I highlight having been able to contribute my experience and see how teamwork helped clients and colleagues to move forward and succeed."

What advice would you like to leave to colleagues who continue on the path?

Jorge: "Stay curious, share knowledge, and never lose sight of the value of teamwork. But what really makes the difference is bold thinking and the courage to take initiatives; Do not be afraid of mistakes and see them as an opportunity to learn and continue: it will be better next time because by then you will have identified the mistakes and you will know how to avoid repeating them. My direct colleagues (at least) are young, prepared people, with a lot of knowledge and with the ability to continue learning: they can do almost anything they set their minds to."

How do you hope to enjoy this new stage?

Jorge: "Calmly and with enthusiasm: dedicating more time to the family, traveling and enjoying personal interests. And also enjoying the things that arise as they arise: life always surprises if one remains attentive and curious. Live this new stage without haste, but actively: for now I do not see myself enjoying a contemplative life. "( LOL )

Last, if only one word -what word would you use about your time at Power Consulting? 

Jorge: Gratitude

Esta semana marca el final de una carrera de 50 años antes de la jubilación. Lee la entrevista con Jorge Ponse, querido compañero del equipo de Power Consulting con sede en Madrid, España.

Jorge, mirando atrás, ¿cuántos años abarca tu carrera profesional en total?

Jorge: “En total, han sido 50 años de carrera profesional (15 en Argentina, y 35 en España). Empecé a trabajar a los 19 años en Argentina mientras estudiaba Ingeniería Eléctrica. En 1991 se me presentó la oportunidad de trabajar en España para una firma de ingeniería y consultoría española. Esta empresa fue adquirida por ABB Power Grids en 2000; y finalmente esta última fue adquirida por Hitachi Energy: en  los últimos 35 años he cambiado varias veces de empresa sin haberme movido de mi escritorio (LOL). Fueron años llenos de aprendizaje, retos y grandes personas en el camino. Ha sido un recorrido muy enriquecedor, tanto a nivel profesional como personal. Mi trabajo además me dio la oportunidad de conocer países a los que tal vez no se me habría ocurrido viajar como turista: El Salvador, Rusia, Angola… y por supuesto toda España.”

¿Y cuántos de esos años los has pasado en Power Consulting Spain?

Jorge: “He tenido el privilegio de trabajar los últimos 26 años en Power Consulting Spain (los últimos 6 años como empleado de Hitachi Energy). Ha sido una etapa muy importante de mi vida profesional que recordaré siempre con el mayor aprecio.”

¿Qué es lo que más has disfrutado de trabajar en Power Consulting?

Jorge:”Sin duda, las personas. La colaboración, la confianza y el espíritu de equipo hicieron que incluso los momentos más exigentes merecieran la pena. No me refiero solo a mis colegas consultores, sino también a los managers con los que tuve la suerte de colaborar. Pero, en mi honesta opinión, todas las buenas cosas que mencionaba tal vez no habrían sido tan fácilmente posibles sin el espíritu de trabajo ético, saludable y productivo que brinda la filosofía de Hitachi para todos los miembros de su corporación, entre otros valores, y que sus ejecutivos y managers transmiten a todo el personal de forma permanente y en cada detalle.”

¿De qué momento o experiencia te sientes más orgulloso?

Jorge: “A lo largo de tanto tiempo ha habido muchos momentos singulares que significaron para mí un orgullo por los objetivos alcanzados. Pero en general destaco haber podido contribuir con mi experiencia y ver cómo el trabajo en equipo ayudaba a clientes y compañeros a avanzar y tener éxito.”

¿Qué consejo te gustaría dejar a los compañeros que continúan el camino?

Jorge: “Manteneos curiosos, compartid conocimientos y no perdáis nunca de vista el valor del trabajo en equipo. Pero lo que realmente marca la diferencia son las palabras “atreverse” y “audacia”; no tener miedo al error y verlo como una oportunidad para aprender y continuar: ya se hará mejor la próxima vez porque para entonces se habrán identificado los fallos y se sabrá cómo evitar repetirlos. Mis compañeros directos (al menos) son gente joven, preparada, con muchos conocimientos y con capacidad para seguir aprendiendo: pueden hacer casi cualquier cosa que se propongan; y mejorar de forma continua.”

¿Cómo esperas disfrutar esta nueva etapa?

Jorge: “Con calma y con ilusión: dedicando más tiempo a la familia, viajando y disfrutando de intereses personales. Y también disfrutando de las cosas que vayan surgiendo a medida que se presenten: la vida siempre sorprende si uno se mantiene atento y curioso. Vivir esta nueva etapa sin prisas, pero de forma activa: por ahora no me veo disfrutando de una vida contemplativa.” (LOL)
