Rectifier Transformers to support expansion of Green Hydrogen production in Europe for KK Wind

Customer Story | 3 min read

As industries worldwide race to reduce carbon emissions, green hydrogen has emerged as a cornerstone of the clean energy transition. Produced through electrolysis powered by renewables, it offers a sustainable alternative to fossil-based hydrogen. To accelerate this shift, KK Wind Solutions, a pioneer in wind energy systems, partnered with Hitachi Energy to develop reliable, efficient power supply solutions for next-generation hydrogen production plants.

Challenges

Overcoming technical complexity and building new capabilities

Despite its potential, green hydrogen production demands complex power conversion systems capable of handling high loads safely and efficiently. Leveraging decades of experience in renewable technologies, KK Wind Solutions aimed to design modular, grid-compatible Power Supply Units (PSUs) that could adapt to various electrolyzer sizes and plant configurations.

Specifically for this project, KK Wind Solutions identified the need for dry-type, three-winding rectifier transformers capable of delivering power to two active front-end rectifiers, each supporting a 5 MW electrolyzer unit.

The primary challenge was to deliver a solution that not only balanced cost-effectiveness and flexibility but also achieved a compact footprint without compromising the demanding safety and reliability expectations unique to hydrogen production.

KK Wind Solutions sought a partner with proven expertise and a commitment to comprehensive support throughout all project execution phases.

RESIBLOC® Technology

Hitachi Energy's Solution

Tailored engineering and collaborative innovation

To meet the demanding requirements of the project, Hitachi Energy supplied 10 RESIBLOC® Dry-type Rectifier Transformers, each rated at 13.3 MVA, manufactured in Germany and tailored to KK Wind Solutions’ performance and safety requirements.

At the core of the RESIBLOC® technology lies robust cast-resin insulation and exceptional mechanical strength, providing top-tier fire safety and reliable durability in even the most challenging environments. Through close collaboration, Hitachi Energy helped optimize the Power Supply Unit (PSU) system design, reducing footprint and total cost of ownership.

RESIBLOC® Technology

Introduced by Hitachi Energy in 1974, RESIBLOC is a pioneering dry-type transformer technology that revolutionized electrical insulation by replacing oil with a robust cast resin system reinforced with glass fiber. Today, RESIBLOC remains the trusted choice of users worldwide, with over 70,000 units installed across more than 120 countries, continuing to set the benchmark for reliability.

Benefits

Advancing industrial decarbonization

The collaboration between KK Wind Solutions and Hitachi Energy supports the efficient production of green hydrogen for industrial applications. These integrated systems provide a pathway to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, including metals, chemicals, and oil and gas, thereby contributing to the broader efforts toward a carbon-neutral energy ecosystem.

A key factor in the project’s success is KK Wind Solutions’ strategic adoption of RESIBLOC® technology, developed and supplied by Hitachi Energy. The cast-resin, dry-type construction of RESIBLOC® transformers delivers a significantly reduced system footprint, allowing for more compact and flexible plant layouts, an important advantage for modern hydrogen facilities. The technology’s design flexibility enabled the project team to tailor transformer solutions to KK Wind Solutions’ specific requirements and adapt quickly to changes, ensuring seamless integration and future scalability.

RESIBLOC® transformers also provide exceptional fire safety and mechanical strength, meeting the high safety standards essential for hydrogen applications. Their robust, oil-free design minimizes operational risks and environmental impact, while their durability ensures reliable long-term performance in demanding industrial environments. KK Wind Solutions’ team benefited from hands-on training and technical support, empowering them to operate and maintain the equipment with confidence.

By combining KK Wind Solutions’ forward-thinking approach with Hitachi Energy’s proven technology and grid-to-stack expertise, the partnership is not only scaling up clean hydrogen production but also setting a strong example for the industry.

Converting renewable energy into green hydrogen allows it to be stored and used in industries that can’t easily be electrified, supporting our mission of a sustainable future. The transformer is key to our power supply systems, which drive electrolyzers that produce green hydrogen. We’re pleased to partner with Hitachi Energy on this important project.
