SCMS commissioning Engineer

The Opportunity

Substation Automation Systems Testing & Commissioning for various projects. Act as the responsible commissioning engineer overseeing the installation and commissioning of Substation Automation systems for assignments classified as medium commissioning complexity and manage completion of all commissioning activities efficiently and cost-effectively and in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Represent the Commissioning function at project meetings and design review meetings and contribute to the creation of the project commissioning philosophy and manage its implementation.

  • Implement commissioning design changes and produce as-built project documentation and support continuous improvement of project processes, products, and system design through lessons learned feedback.

  • Assist Project Managers in issuing claims (new scope of work, cost impact, time impact, risk quantifications, etc. create work plans for your area of responsibility and proactively manage tasks to deliver on time, on quality, and at targeted cost.

  • Conduct real-time risk and opportunity assessments during the commissioning phase to ensure safe implementation and identify potential variation requests to support contract claims. Report early any contract, quality, program, or cost issues to management with recommendations for resolution and act as lead for commissioning activities on a project.

  • Ensure professional representation of the organization in all customer interactions. Interface with customers and external providers for approval of plant acceptance criteria, closure of open issues, and performance tests. Coordinate site activities focused on finalizing customer acceptance certification and manage external organizations providing commissioning equipment, systems, or services (e.g., issue permits to work, provide guidance on health and safety requirements and work practices, accept completed work).

  • Actively develop and coach colleagues. Cultivate a network of engineering peers within and outside the business unit. Take a lead role in developing the function within the business unit by gathering and sharing best practices.

  • Create standard processes and tools. Use agreed procedures to ensure all commissioning activities comply with safety regulations and contractual requirements and manage small commissioning teams and prepare project documentation for SAT and obtain approvals from utilities for commissioning activities of SAS systems.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience with third-party products and systems and provide proactive coordination and reporting to the principal commissioning engineer operationally and the commissioning manager functionally.

Your Background

  • Thorough knowledge of substation automation systems and different communication protocols and working knowledge and understanding of GRS systems on various protocols (IEC101, IEC104). Familiarity with design tools such as Visio and strong knowledge of cybersecurity and its implementation and RTU commissioning experience is an advantage.

  • Thorough knowledge of control and interlocking logic in substations and strong customer orientation, communication, and presentation skills.

  • 5–8 years’ experience as a commissioning engineer for SAS systems and products and experience handling large and medium-complex projects in operation, with 4–5 years in IEC 61850.

  • Ability to manage 2–3 projects per year with team sizes of 2–4, understanding customer needs and optimizing electrical design for time, cost, quality, and customer satisfaction.

  • System-wide understanding, product knowledge, and ability to handle complex systems and ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks with an analytical and strategic approach.

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is required; Arabic is a plus.
