With long distances of power transmission, Statnett the Norwegian Transmission System Operator (TSO) and BKK has a high demand of Shunt reactors (SR) for voltage stability in their network.
By 2010 they decided to prioritize Variable shunt reactors (VSR) in favor of traditional SR’s to further increase the flexibility and ability to control their transmission system. At the same time, Statnett introduced higher demands on VSR’s.
Hitachi Energy's in-house R&D and manufacturing capabilities, for both Variable Shunt Reactor technology and for On-Load Tap-Changers, made it possible to meet the high demands on regulation range and delivered the first 420 kV 3-phase Variable Shunt Reactor in 2012.
In total, Hitachi Energy has delivered 10 units of 90 – 200 MVar, 420 kV 3-phase Variable Shunt Reactors to Statnett and BKK.
The latest successful delivery of the VSR’s with extended regulation range to the Norwegian nation grid was two units, to BKK Net, in 2015 and 2016.
