Public Utilities Fortnightly magazine recognizes ‘Top Innovators’ from Hitachi ABB Power Grids

Annual special issue highlights some of the most important advances in power systems, from some of the industry’s top minds

Each year Public Utilities Fortnightly, a leading magazine serving the public utilities community in the United States, publishes a special issue recognizing some of the top innovations and innovators in the industry.

This year, Hitachi ABB Power Grids had nominees selected in four out of ten categories, with eight of our engineers, software developers and researchers chosen for either team or individual consideration in categories including transmission and microgrids.

Public Utilities Fortnightly then selected the most outstanding submissions in ten categories of innovation, designated Fortnightly Foremost Innovators 2020. The ten categories for 2020 are: distributed generation, drones, environmental protection, microgrids, renewables integration, reliability and resilience, robotics, transmission, virtual reality, wearables.

“This recognition highlights the important work our teams are doing to drive the power industry forward,” said Debrup Das, Manager of the North America Research Center at Hitachi ABB Power Grids. “Whether the focus is on protecting assets from cyberattack, driving sustainability through the advancement of microgrids and battery technologies, or leveraging digital technologies to more effectively manage power grids, our people are at the forefront. We are proud to count these innovators as our own.”

The team of Anil Kondabathini, HyoJong Lee, Reynaldo Nuqui, Jiuping Pan, based in Raleigh, North Carolina at our North America Research Center, were selected as this year’s Fortnightly Foremost Innovator in transmission, for the creation of a novel cybersecurity protection scheme for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. This particular recognition was highlighted in a Public Utilities Fortnightly Profile in Innovation.

This team, also based in Raleigh, North Carolina at our North America Research Center, developed a comprehensive cyber-physical control, communication, and operation architecture for microgrids. 


Tucker Reed

Tucker was noted for leading the launch of the company’s asset performance management (APM) software for power transformers, APM Edge which helps reduce transformer downtime.


Parag Upadhyay

Finally, Parag was noted for producing ground-breaking research on reverse power flow in distributed energy systems, which has significant implications for grid performance.
