We have placed sustainability at the heart of our Purpose and made a promise to advance a sustainable energy future for all.

Under the Planet strand for action of our sustainability strategy, we are targeting to accelerate the clean energy transition, with particular focus on three areas: climate, circular economy, and biodiversity and ecosystems.

Our top targets

All targets by 2030 unless otherwise specified.

Within our sustainability strategy’s Planet strand of action  – and in alignment with relevant SDGs, our high-impact commitments, and Hitachi Energy’s guiding principles – are the following top targets:

Net-zero by 2050 -80% Scope 1+2 (absolute), -55% Scope 3 (intensity), Carbon-neutral own operations
Service and digital for sustainability Yearly increase in our Service lifecycle value creation index
Increase business positive impact  Top quartile (25%) within peer group, aligned with EU Taxonomy
Accelerating a clean energy transition with a range of solutions for solar, onshore and offshore wind.

Climate

Tackling climate change is central to Hitachi Energy’s Purpose. In our operations, we deliver our contribution across several projects and initiatives, including sourcing fossil-free electricity for our own operations, reducing emissions, consumption, waste, and pollution to the mutual benefit of our economic performance and the environment. Beyond our operations, we pioneer technologies that enable the digital transformation required to accelerate the energy transition towards a carbon-neutral future. Our eco-efficient portfolio, EconiQ, is designed to reduce environmental impact by eliminating the need for SF6.

Carbon neutrality is a major area of attention in our environmental efforts. Our evolving 11 Green Steps program is supporting our operations to address a broad range of environmental challenges, which provide resources and access to expertise, in addition to more focused monitoring and reporting.

Circular economy

Our approach aims to minimize the consumption of resources and maximize their use and reuse, extending product lifecycles while reducing our environmental impact. We collaborate with external partners including customers, suppliers, experts, and academia to identify how we can further reduce pollution and waste to help achieve an increasingly circular economy by implementing the 5R principles: rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle.

We advise customers on designing their energy solutions through our power consulting business, Ecospace platform, and Lifecycle Assessments (LCAs) for projects, products, and specific resource-factor assessments for waste generation and water use. Within our operations, facilities use process innovation and design to address resource efficiency and waste reduction, including Design to Value, Lean Six Sigma (L6S) projects, continuous improvement, or direct action resulting from opportunities identified by our teams.

Biodiversity and ecosystems

Protecting biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural capital is a requirement at every step of our business globally - from supply chain to customers, within our operations and projects.

We believe that this contribution is fundamental to achieving the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets to conserve nature and ensure its sustainable use. At a macro level, our efforts in tackling climate change are complementary to our biodiversity and ecosystem protection drive, with circular economy playing an increasing role.

The supporting framework includes the 11 Green Steps factory program, replacement of hazardous substances, products and chemical compliance, and other sound initiatives. Alongside, our sites worldwide proactively identify and implement ways to reduce their impact on neighboring communities, creating partnerships and projects that employ our global expertise in building local solutions.
