As renewable energy generation continues to expand across northern Scotland, stronger transmission infrastructure is required to move increasing volumes of clean electricity from remote wind resources to population centers and industry. A new offshore transmission link between Spittal and Peterhead has been identified as essential for delivering power from the far north into the national grid, enhancing system resilience and supporting the United Kingdom’s long-term net-zero objectives.
The project is based on a 2000 MW, 525 kV bipolar high voltage direct current (HVDC) system, incorporating approximately 220 km of subsea cable. New HVDC converter stations at Spittal and Peterhead will connect the link to the existing alternating-current network, creating a high-capacity transmission pathway designed to efficiently transport both onshore and offshore wind energy to areas of higher demand.
