Features | 18.11.2025 | 3 min read

Hitachi Energy celebrates the construction start of the transformer factory expansion and a new test hall for transformer components in Ludvika.

This investment is part of the company’s larger investment, announced in June 20241, with the goal of growing to approximately 8,000 employees in Sweden by 2027. The investment strengthens both the region and Sweden’s position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions and contributes to accelerating the global energy transition.

Expanded transformer factory

Hitachi Energy is carrying out a comprehensive expansion of the transformer factory in Ludvika, which represents one of the largest investments ever at the site. The expanded factory will have an area of 20,000 m² and is designed to significantly increase capacity and enable the production of more large power transformers (AC and DC) worldwide.

The expanded factory will significantly increase the production capacity for large power transformers by approximately 40%. The factory will receive new, state-of-the-art equipment and improved production flows, including separate unloading areas for trains and trucks to streamline logistics. This expansion will create approximately 300 new jobs, and recruitment and training of personnel has already started. A dedicated Training Center has also been established to ensure structured and safe training for new employees. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2027.

New test hall for transformer bushings

In addition to the factory expansion, Hitachi Energy is also investing in a new test hall to meet the increasing demand for transformer bushings. The new facility, which includes both a state-of-the-art test hall and a new packing and loading area, is designed to handle ultra-high voltage testing and meet both todays and tomorrow’s needs.

The new test hall will allow improved capacity for routine testing. The facility will be able to handle continued high demand and offer capacity for both retrofits and deliveries to third parties. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.

These expansions strengthen the company’s role as a leader in electrification, powering a sustainable energy future through innovative power grid technologies, such as transformers and their components.

The ceremony - A symbol for the future

The start of construction was marked with a ceremony where employees, partners and representatives from politics and business gathered to celebrate the next step in Hitachi Energy's expansion. Among others, County Governor Helena Höij and Tobias Andersson, Chair, Committee on Industry and Trade, Swedish Parliament, participated in the celebration. Instead of the traditional groundbreaking, it was a symbolic pile ceremony that marked the start of the next era for the transformer business in Ludvika.

We are proud to take the next step for the transformer business in Sweden. A factory like this hasn’t been built in over 100 years, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of this expansion.
