Hitachi Energy India is empowering women through STEM education

Features | India | 22.06.2023 | 3 min read

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are fields that offer immense opportunities for innovation, creativity and problem-solving. However, girls and women are often under-represented. This is a huge loss of talent and potential for the world.

At Hitachi Energy, we are committed to our global commitment towards Diversity 360 vision. We encourage our people to use their skills to nurture this vision. We have identified the need to empower female talent to venture into Engineering and Technology, so that they can shape a better tomorrow. Gender equality is critical for our future and is inherent in our vision of solving today’s most complex issues. Creating a diverse workforce in technology is now a necessity both economically as well as socially.

As pioneers in electrical transmission, we strive towards building an inclusive and more collaborative environment for our women employees in STEM. Through development programs, global employee networks, partnerships and benefits that serve women and allies, we are committed to not only increasing the number of women in our workplace but also empowering our female workforce to be ready for senior leadership positions.

"With equal opportunity, flexibility and support from management, Hitachi Energy has always empowered me to excel at work. I had opportunities to work across various fields, ranging from site services, sales and marketing, operations and business management," shares, Manisha Shukla, Customer support and training manager, Hitachi Energy.

Students visited the Hitachi Energy manufacturing facility in Maneja and interacted with employees.

To achieve our vision, it is also important that we inspire next generation women. Young female students in STEM is another key focus group for Hitachi Energy, India. Our Women in Technology program supports girls and women to enter, remain, thrive and lead in the world of technology. We believe in nurturing and supporting young women talent women to become leaders. By educating women and girls to reach their potential, we not only accelerate the pace of change, but also improve the lives of individuals and communities through better opportunities.

This initiative, in partnership with Shikshana foundation is focused on providing scholarships, training, mentorship and materials to selected women who aspire to be engineers, from less privileged backgrounds.  With this, we have been successful to help young girls to dream of a career in technology which they may not have achieved otherwise.

With this initiative, we have impacted over 200 women.

The students are selected based on their academic performance and are being supported throughout their educational phase. Additionally, these young female students are provided with academic-industrial experience and are sponsored to participate in various technical trainings across different institutions.

Our initiative does not end here, our people are committed in going beyond, to ensure that these students are equipped with right guidance and knowledge, so that they are ready to create an impact in future.  We have strong engagement program where our employees spent time for training and mentoring.

"I had great mentors, who encouraged me to explore challenging roles that are beyond my area of expertise. This inspired me in gaining new perspectives and expand my network, as I continue to learn every day," shares, Harshita M, Operating Unit Manager, Hitachi Energy.
