Release of railway application RER670 version 2.1

Following the successful release of Relion® 670 series version 2.1, we are pleased to release RER670. The protection and control IED, RER670 is for 16.7 Hz railway transmission systems. The IEC 61850 Ed. 2 compliant IED covers transmission line and transformer protection as well as control applications.

RER670 flexible protection and control device for 16.7 Hz 2-phase railway applications protects transmission lines or power transformer in solidly, compensated and high impedance earthed networks.

Key 670 series family features like IEC 61850 Edition 2 and support for central account management for integration with a centralized authentication infrastructure are equally available as the wide range of analog and binary I/O modules and the user friendly local display.

New features and benefits

The key features and their benefits of RER670 version 2.1 are listed below:

  • The line distance protection function with quadrilateral or circular starting characteristic provides sub-cycle tripping performance. Its six zones have fully independent measuring and setting which gives high flexibility for all types of lines. Load encroachment and adaptive reach compensation are included.
  • The transformer protection covers transformer differential protection for two-phase to two-phase as well as two-phase to one-phase transformers. Besides the transformer differential protection, a wide range of backup functions are available.
  • A very fast transformer tank protection helps to avoid damages in the case of short circuits to the transformer tank.
  • To minimize stress on equipment and power system RER670 contains a transformer energizing function for controlled energizing of power transformers.
  • A wide range of control functions can also be included in RER670 to either complement the line or transformer protection IED with advanced control functions or to provide a control IED with optional backup protection.
  • RER670 provides IEC 60870-5-103 as well as IEC 61850 Edition 2 communication to a substation automation system or, in case of IEC 61850, also for horizontal communication between IEDs.
  • Flexible product naming enables the mapping of an IED-vendor independent IEC 61850 model to that of the 670 series. This helps easy deployment of the 670 series when utility defined IEC 61850 communication model is to be mapped to that of the IEDs. This is effortlessly done in PCM600.
  • Support for Centralized Account Management (CAM) to enable easy deployment of users, access rights, and certificates in the substation automation system. Together with Hitachi Energy’s System Data Manager SDM600, it brings a powerful integration of the IEDs with access control and thereby increasing cybersecurity support for compliance to NERC CIP and IEC 62351-8.
  • Forcing of binary inputs & outputs for efficient and fast testing and commissioning.
