South Boston, VA, June 29, 2026 – Hitachi Energy today broke ground on a major expansion of its South Boston campus, marking the next phase of a previously announced investment to establish the nation’s largest facility for the production of large power transformers, one of the most critical and in-demand electrical grid components. The $457 million project will bring about 825 new jobs to Halifax County.

Joined by Governor Abigail Spanberger, Senator Mark Warner, Congressman John McGuire, and other state and local leaders, Hitachi Energy marked the start of construction on a facility that will produce this critical equipment essential to a reliable, modern electric grid. The expansion will support transmission, generation, data centers and other industrial customers nationwide while deepening the company’s long-standing partnership with the Commonwealth.

The expansion will take place at Hitachi Energy’s existing South Boston campus, where the company already employs about 850 people and has been part of the community since 1968. The new project builds on almost six decades of manufacturing in Southside Virginia and will nearly double the facility’s existing workforce.

The South Boston expansion is a cornerstone of Hitachi Energy’s more than $1 billion investment in U.S. grid equipment manufacturing. A significant share of that investment is taking place in Virginia, reinforcing the Commonwealth’s growing role in strengthening the nation’s energy security. The large power transformers produced in South Boston will help ensure reliable electricity for communities, businesses, and industries across the country.

This groundbreaking is a monumental event for Southern Virginia and the entire Commonwealth. Hitachi Energy’s $457 million investment and the creation of 825 new jobs will accelerate the region’s economic trajectory while strengthening Virginia’s leadership in advanced manufacturing. By producing more critical large power transformers here at home, we are not only supporting economic growth but also securing the infrastructure needed to power our future.

Abigail Spanberger
Governor of Virginia

For more than five decades, this site has been a cornerstone of Halifax County’s economy, and today, Hitachi Energy builds on that proud legacy. From its beginnings as a Westinghouse site in 1968, this plant has never stopped delivering high-quality products to customers and meaningful careers to Virginians. With new housing, expanded opportunity, and continued investment, Southern Virginia is positioned for the next generation of growth.

Carrie Chenery
Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade

Today’s groundbreaking is a testament to the work this region has done to make itself an attractive place for economic development, and this project will create opportunities in the region that extend well beyond today’s announcement. Hitachi Energy’s investment further solidifies the region’s reputation as a global leader in transformer manufacturing and will help ensure that our nation can generate, deliver, and secure the reliable electricity and grid infrastructure needed to power our economy for decades to come. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to get this done.

Mark Warner
U.S. Senator - Virginia

I’m delighted to see Hitachi break ground in South Boston as the company expands and upgrades its facilities. This investment will boost the Southside economy, bring jobs to the region, and help keep the Commonwealth at the forefront of innovation and manufacturing.

Tim Kaine
U.S. Senator - Virginia

Today marks an exciting chapter for Southside Virginia as we break ground on Hitachi’s new transformer factory. This multi-million-dollar investment will bring over 800 more jobs to Virginia’s Fifth District, while supporting America’s energy dominance.  As AI becomes more prominent, we must keep up with the growing demand for large power transformers. I was honored to work with the great folks at Hitachi, President Trump, and former Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, to make this a reality. I look forward to the incredible work Hitachi will provide, and the economic growth the area will see as a result.

John McGuire
Congressman (VA-05)

Hitachi Energy is designing the expanded campus with the workforce in mind. Plans include modern amenities such as on-site fitness facilities, recreational courts, a health clinic, a new cafeteria, and shared spaces, creating a workplace where people can build long-term careers and play a meaningful role in strengthening the community.

Every transformer that comes out of this facility is built by our skilled Virginia workforce, helping power communities across the country. With 825 new jobs to come, this expansion marks the continuation of our long-term commitment to South Boston and our local workforce.
